What is double filtration plasmapheresis – DFPP?
Double-filtration plasmapheresis is an extracorporeal therapy procedure in which disease-relevant substances are removed from the blood plasma. These include, among others:
- Autoantibodies
- Cytokines and inflammatory factors
- Immune complexes
- Heavy metals and oxidized lipids
The blood is passed through a filter system outside the body, which selectively retains harmful components – healthy plasma components remain in the body. The method is well tolerated and is carried out under close medical supervision.
Where is the DFPP medically established?
Double filtration plasmapheresis has been used in clinical medicine for decades – for example, in the treatment of cancer:
- Nephrology (e.g. for lipoproteinemia)
- Transplantation medicine
- Immunology (for certain autoimmune diseases)
