For many people, blood purification or blood washing is an unknown but highly effective method of removing harmful substances, inflammatory markers and pollutants from the bloodstream. But what exactly is filtered out – and how does the treatment feel? Our new working student Malena wanted to find out for herself and tried out plasmapheresis for herself.
Malena is active in sports, works out regularly at the gym and takes great care of her health. However, since contracting coronavirus, she has noticed that her body is no longer as efficient as before. A weakened immune system, skin problems and frequent infections affect her well-being and also her progress in sport. In order to do something specifically for her regeneration, she decided to undergo blood purification to remove harmful substances from her body.
“I was a bit nervous before the treatment because I didn’t know exactly what to expect. But the team took really good care of me, explained everything to me and created a relaxed atmosphere,” reports Malena. “During the plasmapheresis itself, I only felt a slight tingling sensation in my arms – overall, it was much more pleasant than I thought it would be.”
After the treatment, she felt surprisingly fresh. She was particularly impressed by the eluate – the liquid that was filtered out: “When I saw everything that was removed from my blood, I was really amazed. I wasn’t even aware that so many harmful substances had accumulated in my body.”

The result was truly impressive: the eluate, i.e. the liquid filtered out, contained numerous substances that could impair their performance and immune system. In addition to metabolic residues that accumulate in the blood over time, inflammation-promoting markers and heavy metals were also filtered out. An optimal blood composition is crucial, especially for people who are active in sports, in order to perform at their best and regenerate quickly after intensive training sessions.
Plasmapheresis purifies the blood so that the body can recover better.
Malena will monitor her experience closely and is excited to see whether her fitness and well-being will improve in the long term as a result of the blood wash. At the same time, she is now actively supporting our team in the areas of digitalization, patient documentation and social media. She is studying health sciences at TUM and brings a lot of specialist knowledge with her – we look forward to her support!
